Elefence
and CLZ Elefence is committed to providing funds and resources
to support CLZ's programs and activities. The Elefence New Horizons for Africa
Project in Lower Zambezi National Park will employ additional efforts and
resources for safeguarding people and wildlife in this important ecosystem in
Zambia. Three key areas of focus include:
Safeguarding
People, Safeguarding Wildlife - Support
the crucial work of rangers who are almost single-handedly protecting the Lower
Zambezi National Park from further destruction.
- Maintain
anti-poaching patrols on land, on the river and in the air.
- Construct
hilltop observation posts to aid in greater protection of the Zambezi Valley floor.
- Support
Education and training of rangers and local people in anti-poaching operations,
desnaring techniques and animal rehabilitation.
Economic
Stability - Develop
a cultural village for tourism through the production of artifacts and crafts,
to benefit the local people living along the Lower Zambezi National Park and surrounding
game management areas.
- Develop
a cultural museum adjacent to the park to attract foreign visitors as well as
encourage preservation of African oral histories, artifacts, musical instruments,
tribal family life and pride of heritage among the local people.
- Create
opportunities for active inter-cultural exchanges with American Universities and
the park and museums.
- Utilize
the new tented camp for tourists to bring in much needed revenue to the area and
the park.
- Secure
vocational and technical assistance to help build on-going bush road extensions
for game drives and to help with rapid response to poaching problems
Research
/ Database - Conduct
Large Mammal and Predator Surveys to create a database from which effective wildlife
protection and anti-poaching activities can be developed.
- Conduct
studies of animal and plant species.
- Assess
land use or misuse in the area to develop programs to protect the biodiversity
and ecosystem.
- Assess
agricultural practices and coordinate programs to address ways to enhance or improve
crop and cattle productions and quality and thereby lessen pressures on the ecosystem.
- Support
the wildlife management strategy underway to create a protected zone" to
reintroduce the black rhino and other endangered species to the area.
