ZAWA
and CLZ
The combination of limited government resources, poor community
awareness of natural resource opportunities and illegal hunting activities has
had a serious impact on wildlife and habitat in the area. In the last twenty years,
the elephant population has been decimated, the large number of black rhino has
been exterminated and commercial meat poaching operations have taken a major toll
on buffalo, antelope, zebra and the carnivore population.
The Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) has been given the responsibility of administering and policing this as well as surrounding game management areas. The ZAWA area warden and officers must cover an enormous area with limited resources and supplies. To support ZAWA's efforts, Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) was established as a non-profit organization made up of stakeholders in the area that were committed to safeguarding the wildlife and habitat as an asset and resource of the lower Zambezi.
