DICK HOUSTON

Dick Houston

President & Co-Founder

Dick Houston, President of ELEFENCE is an elephant conservationist and writer. Born in Ohio, he received his bachelors in English and history from Kent State University, and masters in English from Edinboro University.

He taught English and creative writing in the USA, Venezuela, and at American Embassy schools in Kenya, Zambia, and South Africa. He's written on Africa topics for Smithsonian, The New York Times, Toronto Star, Reader's Digest, Los Angeles Times, and other international publications.

For many years he ran camping journeys across the Sahara Desert, through the Congo rainforests, and in the bush country of eastern and southern Africa. He worked with legendary Born Free author Joy Adamson in Kenya. His obsession with historic safari movies made in frontier Africa, led to a film conservation project at The Library of Congress. His job was to identify a staggering 140 miles of the 'lost films' of pioneering documentary moviemakers, Martin and Osa Johnson -- leading to the preservation of the fragile nitrate footage. The project was sponsored by the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum in Kansas, where he is an Honorary Trustee.

Dick has written books Safari Adventure [Penguin USA]; Bulu: African Wonder Dog [Penguin Random House], and is at work on two Africa novels. He's co-Founder of ELEFENCE.
