There were many exciting events that took place in honor of the second annual Elefence Zoo Day Walk-a-Thon. One of the highlights was a debut of the original story 'Under the Butterfly Tree' created specifically for Elefence International. Elefence Creative Arts Specialist, Robin Echols Cooper and Elefence Education Director, Lisa Zupon wrote this story. The story was inspired by the mission of Elefence to help resolve the human-wildlife conflict in Africa. A variety of lessons have been developed around this story that provide motivation for student problem solving. These lessons can be found on the lesson plan page.

Mrs. Cooper enacted the story using her enthusiastic and animated voices. The characters seemed to come to life as she told the folk tale. Mrs. Cooper and Ms. Zupon made colorful masks to be used in the dramatic portrayal of the story. After the presentation, guests were invited up on stage to wear the masks and parade around. The story entertained as well as informed the audience of the need to protect the animals and people that live near the South Luangwa National Park.

Walkers participating in the walk-a-thon were asked to complete a quiz. Questions were asked that pertain to Elefence International and their mission to protect the endangered Ecosystem of Zambia. Entrees with the most correct answers were awarded prizes. There was also a raffle that took place for Elefence promotional items. Many fun and educational prizes were awarded.

The Elefence International tent was strategically placed across from the pachyderm exhibit. Many educational materials were passed out. Hiram College Ecology Department shared the tent with Elefence. Hiram is concerned with the same biodiversity issues as Elefence, and their exhibits reinforced the need for safeguarding the endangered animals in Africa. Those that visited the Elefence tent were very impressed with both the Elefence and Hiram displays.
